Demographic

A common and well known method of audience research is known as demographics. This defines the population mainly by the proffession that they do. This then is able to break the population down into different groups that labels them by using a letter code to describe the income and status of the members of each group.
In order for a film to successful, the producer needs to know the demographics of their potential audience so that they can shape their film to appeal to a group that has known viewing habits.
A table of demographics would help a producer to analyse what their target group is.

Our thriller is going to be aimed at the student/unemployed proffession. By the thriller being aimed at this social class gives us a broader genre of thriller to choose from due to students having ambitions to become someone in a high paying proffession, or of the upper middle class. Eventhough, this way of finding out a target audience may work for some producers, it has many flaws and can not be accurate due to people having ambitons and the willingness to improve and change their ascribed status to one that is higher up than what they are currently in. It could be argued that the better way of finding a target audience is by using the Psychological profiling method.
